Red-Tailed Hawk Claims Traffic Camera as Nest in Irving, Captivates Texans with HatchlingSource: Texas Department of Transportation

In a remarkable nod to nature's tenacity, observers across Irving, Texas have witnessed a red-tailed hawk lay claim to a rather unconventional nursery - a traffic camera pole high above State Highway 114. According to a report by TxDOT, a pair of hawk eggs has captured the attention of Texans statewide, one of which has successfully hatched, producing a wide-eyed eyas now referred to as the newest member of the local highway-watching community.

Since 2011, Rochelle, which the hawk was affectionately named after the camera's location at Rochelle Drive and State Highway 114, has called this lofty perch her home. Not shying away from the bustling traffic below, she's raised approximately 20 hawk babies, transforming a routine traffic management device into an unofficial wildlife observation post. Tony Hartzel of TxDOT reported that Rochelle has maintained this same nesting spot, returning each year and adding several eggs to her clutch.

This season, Rochelle laid two more eggs, much to the delight of TxDOT staff and an anticipative online audience. The first eyas emerged in late April, while the second egg's occupant, unfortunately, did not survive. This poignant mixture of life and loss has not only highlighted the resilience of nature but also has provided a brief respite from the mundane task of traffic surveillance that the TxDOT workers undertake daily.

Despite the new addition to her brood, TxDOT is committed to ensuring the camera continues serving its primary purpose. Awaiting the unfurling of wings above the traffic they're meant to monitor, TxDOT still utilizes the traffic camera as required. "Watching Rochelle and her babies is a pleasant diversion," TxDOT representatives purportedly remarked, as they also consider her part of the extended TxDOT family.
