A Southwest Airlines flight from Baltimore to Denver was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Nashville due to an unexplained odor in the plane's cabin. Flight 8901, which took off from Baltimore-Washington International Airport at 8:50 p.m. EDT, was diverted shortly after, touching down at Nashville International Airport at around 9:42 p.m. CT on Tuesday, reported WKRN.

A spokesperson for Southwest confirmed the incident and stated via WPDE, "Flight 8901 from Baltimore/Washington (BWI) to Denver diverted to Nashville after an odor was detected in the cabin." The aircraft was promptly taken out of service upon landing. According to WSMV, the cause of the odor which led to the detour was not disclosed. In what seemed to be an attempt to quickly mitigate the disruption, the passengers were swiftly transitioned to a replacement aircraft to continue their journey to Denver.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 safely arrived at Denver International Airport at 12:50 a.m. MDT on Wednesday, indicating that despite the diversion, passengers reached their final destination with only a brief delay. "We appreciate our Customers’ patience as we work to get them to their destinations as quickly as possible," Southwest said in a statement obtained by WPDE.

Southwest Airlines has not released further comments, and at this time, it remains unclear what the odor was or what could have caused it.
