Washington County Allocates $10 Million for New Homeless Access Centers in Tigard and HillsboroSource: Washington County

The fight against homelessness just got a $10 million boost in Washington County as officials earmarked funds for two new access centers. According to an announcement from the county's website, the centers will be located in Tigard and Hillsboro, offering a "welcoming front door" to critical services and support for those in need.

Washington County Chair Kathryn Harrington remarked on the initiative stating, "We’ve diligently built out a homeless services system of care with voter-approved Supportive Housing Services resources," and further noted the importance of access centers as a next step, according to the Washington County. These spaces aren't just for emergency shelter during severe weather, they are also set to provide showers, hot meals, and case management. Operating seven days a week, 12-hours a day, the centers will provide more than just respite, they are connections to a path forward.

Located adjacent to public transportation and employment opportunities, the Hillsboro site involves a full rebuild of an existing facility by Project Homeless Connect. This extensive renovation is expected to yield a hub for wraparound services catering to a variety of needs. Executive Director Kim Marshall emphasized the significance of this upgrade, "For 18 years, Project Homeless Comment has been a vital resource in our community," she told county officials. "But it's only now, thanks to the voter approved - Supportive Housing Services measure, that we finally have the necessary tools to effectively serve our homeless friends."

Meanwhile, the Just Compassion access center in Tigard has received praise from local leadership. Tigard Mayor Heidi Lueb explained how critical such resources are, "This dedicated center will help community members have greater access to safe, stable places to go during the day and access to more support services than ever before," she stated, according to the Washington County. While the expansion of these services marks a step forward, there's anticipation for future developments, as the county aims to establish additional access centers in Beaverton, and one in western Washington County.
