West Palm Beach is stepping up its game in the fight for rail safety with a new policy resolution aiming to completely eradicate railway-related fatalities and serious injuries. Dubbed "Rail S.A.F.E." (Safety And Functionality for Everyone), the plan was embraced by the city government as a comprehensive safety overhaul. Mayor Keith A. James underlined the urgent need for such measures, noting the city's swelling population and annual transit ridership figures that exceed 8 million, in a statement that highlights the ever-increasing encounters between residents, visitors, and the rail system, according to the City of West Palm Beach.

City Commissioner Christy Fox, who also sits on the Palm Beach Transportation Planning Agency (TPA) Executive Board, championed the "Rail S.A.F.E." resolution, describing it as a policy that shifts rail safety concerns to the forefront of social equity issues. Fox told the City of West Palm Beach's news portal, "By prioritizing these proactive measures, we are working to enhance safety while also improving the functionality and accessibility of our rail system for all who live, work, and visit West Palm Beach." The Safe Systems approach will roll out multidimensional safety layers, including infrastructure and road design improvements, intensified public awareness, and targeted policy amendments aimed at preventing accidents on the track.

A detailed “Keep It Rail S.A.F.E." Action Plan is in the pipeline, ready to map out how the city intends to achieve its zero-fatality vision through a blend of engineering modifications, educational initiatives, and enforcement strategies. The plan also aims to continue building on previous achievements which include studies on trespass prevention and concerted safety campaigns.

With ambitions as high as zero railroad-related casualties, West Palm Beach is positioning itself as a trailblazer for other South Florida regions to follow. The "Rail S.A.F.E." policy is more than an operational checklist; it's a pledge to make the city's rail system safer, more reliable, and a preferred option for anyone traveling on foot, by bike, or by public transport, the city's announcement revealed.
