Johns Creek Woman Charged with DUI After Police Rescue Her from Burning SUV Source: Google Street View

A fiery car crash in Johns Creek leads to DUI charges for a local woman after officers heroically pulled her from a burning SUV. On March 15, Alka Bharwaj found herself in a life-threatening situation when her Range Rover flipped and caught fire in the front yard of a residence near Knollcrest Boulevard. Johns Creek police responded to the scene, where they discovered Bharwaj trapped inside her vehicle.

Body camera footage obtained by WSB-TV captured the tense moments as officers worked to quickly extinguish the flames. One officer can be clearly heard telling Bharwaj, "Your car is on fire," before proceeding to smash the sunroof with a special tool to rapidly rescue her from the inferno. Despite the immediate danger, police managed to extract Bharwaj from the wreckage and possibly save her life.

The rescue, however, took a turn when an officer spotted an open alcohol bottle in Bharwaj's vehicle. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the officer pulled the open container from within the vehicle during the emergency intervention. This discovery led to Bharwaj facing multiple charges, including DUI, reckless driving, and driving with an open container.

Despite the heroic rescue, the charges stand to seriously mar what started as a successful operation to save a life. An open bottle of alcohol was allegedly found between Bharwaj’s legs, complicating an already dramatic day. Officers were able to not only fight to control the fire but also ensure that Bharwaj was safely removed from the premises, according to WSB-TV. The incident has highlighted both the valor displayed by the officers and the dangers of driving while under the influence.
