Tragedy struck Contra Costa County last night when a fatal crash on SR-4 claimed the life of one driver, authorities reported. The California Highway Patrol's Contra Costa division said two vehicles were involved in the collision just before midnight near Hercules.

According to the CHP's statement, the accident occurred on the westbound side of SR-4, east of the I-80 interchange. With only the driver inside, a grey Jeep Wrangler and a silver Buick Regal came into contact on the roadway, leading to disaster. The driver of the Buick, ignored by the safety of a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The CHP Contra Costa team is investigating the circumstances that led to the collision. To piece together the incident, they are calling on any witnesses who might have seen the crash or the events leading up to it to come forward.
