It looks like the Upper Haight's skyline might be due for an extremely rare addition. If an application filed this spring goes through, the Haight will add its first brand new housing stock in quite a while, on the same lot that houses Cha Cha Cha.

The proposed development at 1801 Haight St. (at Shrader) would leave Cha Cha Cha untouched, using the vacant lot behind the restaurant to construct a new four-floor mixed use building.

The structure would add seven market-rate apartments, and a 400-square-foot street-level commercial space.

The project is currently in the pre-application, "preliminary assessment" phase, which allows the city to provide feedback on the proposal before an actual application is filed.

SF Planning's Pedro Peterson said the agency expects to complete a reply to the proposal by early May. We'll keep you posted as the project progresses.
